Biographies of Some Baseball Greats

recommended by Peter Steinberg, avid reader

In this era of steroids in the locker room and asterisks in the record books, it's nice to remind oneself that baseball has an inspiring past. And at the suggestion of friend who's a baseball fan, I ordered the books by the year in which the player first made MVP.

If you think we've left anyone off the list we probably still think they're one of baseball's greats -- we just couldn't find a biography or memoir that was good enough to recommend. In fact, can you recommend a good biography of Ty Cobb, Mickey Mantle, Joe DiMaggio, Roger Maris, or Willie Mays?

And if you know any books we should add to the list above, .
