Memoirs of Our Presidential Candidates

a book list by Peter, the avid reader who runs Flashlight Worthy

The 2008 presidential election was an unusual one in many ways. Not the least of which is that most (if not all) of the major candidates had already written memoirs.

While certainly some of these books — or at least passages — were quite self-serving. I found one them (ahem, ahem. Obama. ahem.) to be tremendously honest and refreshing.

Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance

Dreams from My Father: A Story of Race and Inheritance

by Barack Obama

Lynda O'Connor from Lake Forest, IL says:

This is a fabulous book and it helps you understand the president's psyche a lot. It shows how far you can go if you work hard and have set goals. I loved the book.

The Audacity of Hope: Thoughts on Reclaiming the American Dream

The Audacity of Hope: Thoughts on Reclaiming the American Dream

by Barack Obama

Alice Rene says:

Born of a black father and white mother, a boy must face the challenges of being abandoned by his father and whose mother, though caring and loving, moves to Indonesia to establish another family. Shuttled between his mother and grandparents and struggling to understand his identity, this boy becomes the president of the United States.

This book also appears on Books for Dealing With Your Challenges

Faith of My Fathers

Faith of My Fathers

by John McCain, Mark Salter

McCain fell a long way during the 2008 campaign. Not from grace exactly, but from... a more honorable place?

This book is an excellent reminder of what an amazing person John McCain was — and hopefully still is somewhere under his current Republican Party-pandering shell.

Promises to Keep: On Life and Politics

by Joe Biden

Now that Biden's been added to the ticket, I've added his book to this list. In taking a careful look at the Amazon reviews (these political books draw out the rabid fans) it seems that the book, despite not being a big seller, is a solid, interesting read.

Sarah: How a Hockey Mom Turned Alaska's Political Establishment Upside Down

Sarah: How a Hockey Mom Turned Alaska's Political Establishment Upside Down

by Kaylene Johnson

It's hard to imagine that anyone will be interested in this book now that the election has passed. Then again, 2012 isn't that far away...

Living History

by Hillary Rodham Clinton

Finally, in a nod to how close she came to being the 2008 candidate, we felt we should include Hillary's Memoir.
