Any good one volume biographies of Thomas Jefferson? asked 778 days ago by Banet - 1 answer

I'd love to read a biography of each U.S. President -- in order.

I thought Thomas Flexner's bio of Washington wasn't bad. And obviously McCullough's bio of John Adams was excellent. But when you get to Jefferson you hit a wall. Dumas Malone wrote a 6(?) volume bio -- too long! And there's Joe Ellis' American Sphinx... but that's not really a bio, but a character study.

Any suggestions?

Thomas Jefferson by Richard Bruce Bernstein is only 198 pages, but the author provides a vivid, interesting portrait of his subject. This book is concise and easy to read. The Road to Monticello: The Life and Mind of Thomas Jefferson by Kevin J. Hayes is an interesting biography that focuses on Jefferson's thought processes and the literary life of Thomas Jefferson an avid reader and book collector. Also, American Sphinx by Joseph J. Ellis is an excellent, well-written critique of our third President. I hope you find these books interesting and informative.
