Anyone know the title/author of the following book . asked 277 days ago by Marion - no answers yet

It post-apocalypse. The mainland is gone or else no one's answering. It's set in Martha's vineyard (or the like), NE US anyway, has people learning new skills due to not able to get new supplies, there is a lesbian ship captain, some other people closer to Florida whom they trade with and eventially they sail to England to trade. People on the island learn how to work metal, etc as all of this is gone with the apocalypse. It was published in the 80-90's.
