Books about Sub-Saharan Africa asked 551 days ago by Jen - 4 answers

I'm looking for fiction set in Sub-Saharan Africa. I realize this is a huge area, but I'm hoping that will generate more results than I've gotten (elsewhere) when I've been more specific. A positive tone is preferable but not totally necessary. I'd also like to steer clear of the outside observer type; I'm really looking for books about places focused on the people who live in them, not the people who travel to them. Thanks!

Cara says:

The Power of One by Bryce Courtenay (one of my favorites...there is a movie but the book is far better and more thorough)
A Cowrie of Hope by Binwell Sinyangwe (lovely collection of short stories)
Joys of Motherhood by Buchi Emecheta
God's Bits of Wood by Ousman Sembene
The Beautyful Ones Are Not Yet Born by Ayi Kwei Armah

and of course anything by Chinua Achebe. I don't know that these are the best books but I read and appreciated the ones i listed. good luck!

Chinua Achebe - Things fall apart. the absolute classic of this genre. Basically regarding a tribe leader, Okonkwo, and the difficulties he faces when christian missionaries come to Nigeria to spread their new religion and way of life.

William Boyd, A Good Man In Africa
Deon Meyer, Blood Safari (thriller)
Nadine Gordimer, July's People
Alan Paton, Too Late the Phalarope
