English as a second language asked 238 days ago by KatyaV - 4 answers

An adult with a very basic English vocabulary wants to read a novel that would be interesting. Not a children's book and not an abridged classic.
What would you recommend?

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close: A Novel
Jonathan Safran Foer

This is an adult novel written from the point of view of a nine year old, so very basic, but a really wonderful novel. Since it deals with the aftermath of 9/11, it may not be for you, but I thought it was a wonderful novel.

The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon.
This book is written from the point of view of an autistic teenager, so the language is simple, but there is nothing simple about the story. A wonderful, interesting book.

Neo-classic, perhaps - Pear Buck's China books? "The Good Earth" is a fine novel and I don't think it puts too much strain on vocabulary. But this is an unanswerable question, really. I want to read the books I WANT TO READ and not be recommended stuff that I have no interest in at all - theme and context-wise - because somebody might think it's within the range of my vocab abilities. I am a speaker of English-as-a-second-language, technically - I waas plunged into it, cold turkey, when I was ten, and by thirteen I was reading the original unabridged John Galsworthy ("The Forsyte Saga") and other arguably "difficult" books. How did I do it? I started reading stuff like Enid Blyton, too "young" for me in terms of content but helping me get to grips with the language, and then just stretching further and further with every next book. Unfortunately that might not be the easiest path for a grown-up - but I'd think the best way forward is to find books that INTEREST THE READER, and then deal with the vocab as it arises. You learn languages best by immersion.

So sorry I totally misunderstood the request, however those are both still great books.

Jonathan Livingston Seagull. Easy reading but inspiring...
