Great Books Taking place in India, all time periods asked 626 days ago by Kay - 16 answers
Shantaram by Gregory D. Roberts
Both take place in the US but refer to Indian culture heavily: The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy. Brilliant book. Thanks everyone for your recommendations! :) The Hungry Tide by Amitav Ghosh was wonderful. The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri Toss of a Lemon by Padma Viswanathan The Spendor of Silence I second the vote for The God of Small Things. A beautiful, brilliant book. Rudyard Kipling: 1) his great spy romance/cultural panorama KIM (which modern literary critic Homi Bhaba admires greatly for its intricate portrait of India); 2) THE JUNGLE BOOKS, well worth re-reading (or discovering) as an adult. I second both Rudyard Kipling's works and A Fine Balance both are very good.
Mistress of Spices By Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni Third the vote for "God of Small THings." Brilliance. A Passage to India by E.M. Forster; The Raj Quartet (4 volumes) by Paul Scott, adapted for television and shown on PBS. The Jewel In The Crown A Suitable Boy by Vikram Seth
