Historical fiction recommendation wanted asked 925 days ago by Kathryn R. - 10 answers

Two of my favorite books are "Pope Joan" and "Year of Wonders." I really enjoy historical fiction, but I am kind of selective in terms of the period of time and place in which they are set. Can anyone recommend a book set anywhere in Europe or Russia between, say 800 A.D. and 1700 A.D.? Many thanks!

Wolfe Hall...best I've read in a long time.

Thank you! Can you tell me a little about it?

Verna W. says:

The Doomsday Book by Connie Willis. Woman time travels from future London to 12th century London and gets caught in the time of the plague. One of my all-time favorite books.

Also try The Dress Lodger by Sheri Holman. Here's a bit from the Amazon review:
"atmospheric, miasmic tale set in cholera-stricken Sunderland, England, circa 1831 is based on fact."

Verna W. says:

OH! And I thought of two others, since you liked Pope Joan:

I, Mona Lisa by Jeanne Kalogridis and The Birth of Venus by Sarah Dunant. They're both set in 15th century Florence. Both have strong women characters.

Kathryn R. (who asked the original question) says:

I'm not going to stop checking for new posts, but I've looked into the books that have been mentioned so far. The one that appeals to me most, in terms of the plot, etc. is "The Doomsday Book." I think I'm going to try to read that first. Thanks for all the great suggestions.

Jonathan's Cross by M.L. Gardner is great historical fiction! Great Depression Era. Highly recommend. It can be found on Amazon.com

Leslie says:

Niccolò Rising: The First Book of The House of Niccolò by Dorothy Dunnett. Dorothy Dunnett is my all time favorite historical fiction writer and the House of Niccolo series takes you all over Europe during the 15the century. She's a stunning writer.

Carrie says:

Pillars of the earth, by Ken Follett. Still one of my favorite historical books ever. Its now made into a tv-movie (not sure if I will ever watch it though).

Laurie B. says:

Find "World's End", an older book by TC Boyle. Set in same location in three different eras. Quite amazing.

R D. says:

Try, "My Wooden Wings," by Rachel Callaray. Great coming-of-age story of a girl in the 1930's where she ski jumps...in secret!
