Humorous Book Club Selections asked 769 days ago by Leah - 18 answersIt's my turn to come up with book choices for my book club to decide on. I am looking for something smart, funny, easy to read and that will illicit some good discussion over wine. Cold Comfort Farm by Stella Gibbons Fool by Christopher Moore The Flavia de Luce mysteries from Alan Bradley Candyfreak by Steve Almond. We did it in my bookclub a few years ago (Birmingham Foodie Book Club, http://foodiebookclub.wordpress.com), it was our October pick (appropriate for Halloween!), and we asked members to each bring their favorite candies. The conversation was very full of nostalgia and rich memories about favorites, plus the demise of small candy businesses & how the food industry is changing. We also talked about favorite homemade candies. Very fun.
"Straight Man" by Richard Russo. Like all Russo books, there's sadness in there. But there are some honest laugh-out-loud moments, more than I've experienced in just about anything I've read.
I'm torn between two titles: I'd go for The Giles Wareing Haters' Club. See my review at http://www.readitinbooks.com/gileswareinghatersclub.html I'll toot my own horn: The Hetta Coffey mystery series by Jinx Schwartz. Just Add Water, Just Add Salt, Just Add Trouble, and coming soon, Just Deserts. jinx "Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal" by Christopher Moore. It's the funniest Christopher Moore book. Excellent. Pretty much anything by Christopher Moore, but most especially Fool or Lamb. "A Dog's Life" by Peter Mayle is very funny and charming. Dog on It (A Chet and Bernie Mystery, #1)by Spencer Quinn or Breathers by S.G. Browne The Eyre Affair by Jasper FForde anything by marian keyes, have 'sushi for beginners' at the moment, cant put it down and my sides are splitting! I love "The Spellman Files" Series by Lisa Lutz. Family, dysfunction, funny, detective agency, alcohol, San Francisco, great characters and a quick, light read. I'll second Jasper Fforde and Christopher Moore, but also consider Jonathan Tropper. His latest, "This Is Where I Leave You," is a great book, but I personally consider "The Book of Joe" to be his best. Charlie Chan Meets Tom Swifty --- see: http://www.e-nuphf.com First, this is not a detective mystery book. It is not a children's book either. This little book is a parody of the Chan character, giving him the chance to voice talking points that no honorable detective should ever mouth -- in the style of a Tom Swifty.
