It is a book I read in gradeschool about a man everyone thought was crazy, and the kids were scared of. He may have lived in a hut or cave. Toward the end of the book he does some heroic deed, then he hits his head or gets hit in the head, and becomes "right" again. He may have fallen out of a barn as a younster??
