I'm looking for books with African American girl characters...suggestions? asked 528 days ago by Kathleen M. - 13 answers

Approx. 4th grade reading level

Taylor M. says:

I have two suggestions, but I'm not sure what reading level they are considered to be. I've always read way outside of my reading level. (The Help) and (Kindred) are the two best books I've ever read. They both have African American girls in them and are amazing. You can look up a summary on them and if it doesn't fit your reading level, then I'm sorry! :)

Anne M. says:

Zilpha Keatley Snyder, The Egypt Game
Mildred D. Taylor, Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry
and, for ages 13 and up: Melissa Mather, One Summer In Between

Verna W. says:

I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou.

Carolyn says:

Phillip Hall Likes Me, I Reckon Maybe

Kay says:

I really liked "Fires of Jubilee" by Alison Hart when I was around that age.
I also enjoyed the American Girl "Addy" series, featuring an African American girl.

I hope this helps!
