Literary romance asked 596 days ago by Claire - 3 answersHi,
I'm looking for beautifully written romantic stories that don't necessarily end happily... Not chic lit, more in the literary fiction genre. Anyone know of one? Claire I liked POSSESSION by A.S. Byatt. Read it years ago and it remains a favorite. Maggie O'Farrell is a great writer. So is Sarah Waters; her books are historical fiction and feature lesbian relationships -- if that's not for you, well it's not for you. Another good one in that line is The Sealed Letter by Emma Donoghue. Finally, I loved Blindspot by Jane Kamensky and Jill Lepore -- they're both historians and the novel is a tribute to the novels of the late 18th century. It's set in pre-Revolutionary Boston. I second the Possession recommendation, too, along with Byatt's other novels and her novella/story collections, too. Orlando - Virginia Woolf The Children's Book - A.S. Byatt Jane Eyre - Charlotte Bronte Wuthering Heights - Emily Bronte
