Looking for Christian faith based book recommendations. asked 470 days ago by Miam - 17 answersDo you have a religious or Christian based book club? Book recommendations? Depends on what you're looking for - there's lots of stuff out there and I wouldn't vouch for all of it in terms of the quality of writing. James Scott Bell is good, though - I enjoyed "Deadlock".
Well, there's the steeple hill books through Harlequin (though they aren't sexual), and then the infamous Love Comes Softly series, where the books are wayyy better than the movies.
I just love this guy: http://www.frankperetti.com/ Have you tried any of Randy Alcorn's books: Dominion, Deadline, Edge of Eternity, just finished "safely HOme" - really good!!; Karen Kingsbury's books... there are lots of non fiction. I assume you are looking for fiction books...? - If you are looking for non fiction, let us know - there rare lots of good ones, too. I'm not by any means a religious person but I once read a book a very religious person recommended to me and it turned out to be a "Christian" romance based on 2 little know biblical persons. It was very good but it's kind of hard to find. It was called Priscilla and Aquila by Lois T. Henderson.
Thank you for the answers so far... The bookclub I'm with is with members of my church. We have read a few faith based books, then others that are not, i.e. Russian Winter, East of Eden, etc. We read all kinds of books, but were looking for some ideas on what are good, fiction, faith based books. We read The Shack which was a wonderful book, and some others... I really loved a book called "Heaven is for Real" by Todd Burpo. Very inspirational and eye-opening! :)
Kay: through FLWbooks I went to Amazon and gave Todd Burpo's book "Heaven is for Real" for Christmas and the couple who got told me this weekend they LOVED IT!!
Becky says: I just finished Francine Rivers' books Her Mother's Hope and the sequel Her Daughter's Dream. Both have complex characters that should evoke good discussion. Francine Rivers writes with more polish than some of the other Christian writers I have tried. Absolutely, the best Christian fiction book I've read was Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers - an instant classic and one that will keep you up all night just to finish it. It's a re-telling of the Biblical story of Hosea, set during the gold rush in California. Beautiful, redemptive, engaging. If you love it, try "A Voice in the Wind" and the rest of the books in her "Mark of the Lion" series, although those are a bit more romantic and feminine. For something different, try Sex God by Rob Bell - it takes a new look at how we "do" religion. It's sensory and challenging. (By the way, it's not really about sex.) Blue Like Jazz by Donald Miller is a reflective, poetic account of one man's faith. It reads like a friend is sharing his story over a casual cup of coffee. Girl Meets God by Lauren F. Winner is an engaging true story of a young woman who went from Atheist to Jew to Christian and is part autobiography, part cultural commentary, and part theology. For something traditional, try Desiring God by John Piper. It does a good job of rolling out relational Christianity, but his writing style is very straightforward and somewhat artless. For thought-provoking discussion on Christianity and race or Christianity and charitable works, Same Kind of Different As Me by Ron Hall & Denver Moore is stirring (and a true story). For something a tad more academic but still interesting, check out The Story of Christianity, Vol. 1 & 2, by Justo Gonzalez. It will open to your eyes to the history of the church. For something quite challenging and very academic, try The Rise of Christianity by Rodney Stark. It has ideas you never considered before. Ron Mehl wrote a number of books, including 2 Gold Medallion winners, In Case I can't Be There, written for his 2 sons. Ron was battled lukemia (sp?) for almost 30 yrs - and this book was what he would want to say to his sons if he died before he could talk to him about things that would be important ... every parent needs this book. God Works the Night Shift - also a winner. Anything by Ron Meh will be worth your time. These are non fiction commentaries about life and how to live successfully as God would want you to live. Encouraging! The most amazing nonfiction book that I've ever read is "Angeles on assignment" by Charles and Francis Hunter. It tells the story about reverend Ronald Buck whom angels visited several times and they left him messages to be told in his church. Extremely encouraging book. Full of Gods grace. It really leaves you with the thought: what if ... Christy by Catherine Marshall; A Garden in Paris by Stephanie Grace Whitson and its sequel A Hilltop in Tuscany; the Yada Yada Prayer Group series by Neta Jackson; A Cozy Mystery series by Peggy Darty that includes: When the Sandpiper Calls, A Cozy Mystery, When Bobbie Sang the Blues, A Cozy Mystery #2, When Zeffie Got a Clue, Cozy Mystery Series #3 And lots of books by Dee Henderson, Liz Curtis Higgs, Terri Blackstock, Karen Kingsbury, Jan Karon, Lynn Austin, Gilbert Morris, You have to try some of Judith Bronte's Christian romances. They are phenomenol! I highly recommend "The Greatest Of These." the bible Up and coming author, M.H. Wesley has a compelling true story...she was incredibly healed after being confined to a wheel chair with a mysterious illness for eight months. Her first book, "the Job Experience," chronicles that experience. Her subsequent books, "Beyond the Veil" and "I'm Saved Now What?" are must-reads for any christian book club. Visit her website, www.mhwesley.com for more information. The "love" series is really good.
