Looking for a specific children's novel with rabbit characters (and it's not Watership Down) asked 780 days ago by Peter S. - 9 answers

I remember reading a children's novel -- maybe 150 or 200 pages -- when I was 8 or 9 years old. All the characters were rabbits. But not rabbits like in Watership Down. These rabbits all wore clothing, lived in houses, etc.

I don't recall the plot but I do recall that the characters were also featured in a daily newspaper comic strip in my local newspaper so I think the author might have been local to Fairfield County, CT.

Any ideas?

I haven't fact checked this but could it have been Brer Rabbit?

Peter S. (who asked the original question) says:

Nope. Definitely not Br'er Rabbit. More modern than that. It had a 50's vibe to it even though I suspect it was written in the 70s. Probably the author grew up in the 50s?

If you don't find the answer here, there's a great place to ask at Loganberry Book's web site called "Stump The Bookseller." It's all about finding that children's book you can only remember vaguely... http://logan.com/harriett/stump.html

Peter S. (who asked the original question) says:

Jan, thanks for the tip. I think I'll pass on that website though. It costs $$ to ask a question (albeit not that much) and the success rate as of late is only 33%. I'm going to see if the community here comes up with an answer.

I was so intrigued by your question, so I went to Wikipedia...have you checked there for something that may ring a bell, I could not believe all the fictional rabbits they had listed

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fictional_hares_and_rabbits

Peter S. (who asked the original question) says:

Naomi, thanks for checking Wikipedia -- I can't believe I didn't think of that. Alas, my elusive rabbit is not there.

How do I know? Because I now recall that the rabbit in mind has an alliterative name -- Rabbit R...... Rabbit Roberts? Rabbit Roscoe? I don't remember. Grrrr, this is maddening.

Naomi G. says:

I have my whole family on it....posted it on my facebook page, the only different thing so far is Rupert but he was bear, just always thought he looked like a Rabbit!!

Anne M. says:

Try "Rabbit Hill" by Robert Lawson, which won the Newbery in 1945. Its animals occasionally wear clothes, and the story is set near Danbury, CT--

Peter S. (who asked the original question) says:

Anne... wow. Close -- it's even set within 20 miles of where I specified -- but not it. (I wonder if that part of Connecticut had a lot of rabbits or something?)
