Looking for novels set in Manhattan's art world. Any suggestions? asked 642 days ago by NDT - 14 answers

Anyone read any novels set in the New York art world? I am interested in reading about that scene and thought fiction might be a nice way in. Thanks for your help.

Engimatic I. says:

One of our authors is finishing up a manuscript (of his own - not for us) that takes place vaguely in the area, but the artist has his studio in what is called "the iron triangle".

Nicholas R. says:

The Third Eye by David Knowles (Bloomsbury, UK)

The art world is in the background, rather than the focus. But it%u2019s a brilliant novel.

Scott B. says:

The only one I can think of right now is "From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler." It takes place in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC. It's a children's novel, so probably not quite what you're looking for.

Shennandoah D. says:

I can't remember if its set in NY or not, but it is a mystery/thriller with an art theme. The Flander's Panel by Arturo Perez Reverte. The author is excellent at creating intellectual thrillers.

The World to Come

Michelle says:

A young adult book called From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler. A girl and her brother run away from home and live in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Matt M. says:

David Lipsky's "The Art Fair" is set directly in the NYC art world, by a guy whose parents were artists. And he's just a great guy.

NDT (who asked the original question) says:

Thanks for these suggestions.

I also found Lulu Meets God and Doubts Him by Danielle Ganek. I vaguely remember a bunch of these novels coming out all at once but Lulu was the only one I could find.

Appreciate the answers everyone.

Brian J. says:

There is "The Anthropology of an American Girl" by Hilary Thayer Hamann... It's not the contemporary art world (more late 70s - early 80s) but it is set in the art world regardless.

NDT (who asked the original question) says:

Brian. I actually bought that book for other reasons. Didn't know it had the art world element.

Maybe it will move to the top of the To Read pile.

Thank you.

Anne M. says:

Barbara Goldsmith, The Straw Man (1981)

Oliver Banks, The Rembrandt Panel (really Boston-based, but a deft little art mystery nonetheless)

Todd says:

An Object of Beauty by Steve Martin is exactly what you are looking for.

ps "The Anthropology of an American Girl" is NOT set in the art world. The main character spends a bit of time in NYC but not in the art world at all.

Karen S. says:

An Object of beauty by steve martin is very good...

Annabel S. says:

What I Loved by Siri Hustvedt is set in this world and is a fantastic read. Kristen Tranter's The Legacy is also set in the NY art world.
