Looking for true stories of women explorers... amazing journeys... women immigrant experiences... asked 782 days ago by Chris L. - 20 answersI work for Vancouver Opera and we're looking for a book to promote to book clubs in the Vancouver Area that ties into our world premiere production of an opera based on a true story of a woman who walked from NYC back to Russia across the US and Canada. I've scoured your lists without success. Women explorers? Amazing journeys? Women immigrant experiences? Suggestions appreciated. Tales of a Female Nomad is one of my fave books...the woman who wrote it started nomading in mid life and is living that lifestyle years later! Lin says: AM says: In "Rowing to Latitude," Jill Fredston canoes the coasts of Alaska and Canada, exploring a treacherous, beautiful North. Well written, and definitely adventurous. These are all great! Keep 'em coming! Anything out there with a more romantic edge to it? Or more Russian? Colm Tóibin's 'Brooklyn'. Young girl emigrates from Ireland to the US. Great story, brilliant novel. It`s fiction but describes very well what immigrants from Russia to America had to endure..."Letters from Rifka" by Karen Hesse

"Tilli's Story: My Thoughts Are Free" is the true story of a young German girl's quest for freedom after WWII. Tilli was 5 when WWII started, living in a remote east German farming village. The first part of her story describes living as an ordinary German: required to post a Hitler picture, attend Hitler rallies, join Nazi groups, and never protest the Nazi policies they loathed for fear of retribution. As the war ended, Tilli and a dozen other village girls hid out for months in a tiny windowless attic crawlspace, hidden underneath the roof, for fear of being raped by marauding Russian soldiers. The girls stayed in the space for months ... but ultimately it was to no avail, as Tilli, at age 11, was assaulted by Russian soldiers. This experience, among many others, fueled in the book-loving girl a thirst to escape to a land where people could be free not just in thought but also in action. She dreamed of coming to America, where she hoped an aunt would take her in. Eventually, at age 16 -- fearing persecution by Communist forces -- she escaped by herself in the bottom of a potato wagon to West Germany, and then two years later, to America. "West with the NIght" Beryl Markham The trilogy by Vilhelm Moberg; check out details on amazon.com. "Ann and Liv Cross Antarctica: A Dream Come True!" by Ann Bancroft, Liv Arnesen Thank you all so much! These are all great suggestions! Remember to "keep the pledge" and if you're going to buy any of these, do it through FLW's amazon link! Daughter of Earth is an amazing book about Agnes Smedley, born to a Native American father and White mother. It's a fictional account of her life moving from a difficult farm life in the 1920's to the city, and on to become educated and join th fight for India's independence. Readable, fascinating, totally moving! Shooting the Boh: A Woman's Voyage Down the Wildest River in Borneo by Tracy Johnston I second West is the Night The Woman Who Walked to Russia: A Writer's Search for a Lost Legend This is written by an Australian writer and unfortunately the reviews of it aren't very good. It is supposed to be about Lillian Allig but in fact is more about the author and provides very little information about the legend. Just thought I'd throw it into the mix, regardless. West with the Night by Beryl Markham is my favorite book of all time. Read it or, another great alternative, listen to the Recorded Books version, as the reader actress so beautifully conveys the suspense and drama. I loved the story of May Dodd "1000 White Women" which is a true story about women pioneers who were captured and taken prisoner by the Indians in the 1800's. It is very romantic, too.
