Mythology that reads like a novel? asked 701 days ago by Meg - 12 answers

What is a book that is based on mythology (Greek or Roman) but reads like a novel? I have always been interested in mythology but I am not looking to re-read Edith Hamilton or anything like that. Any mythology books out there that are exciting, scary and even a little romantic?

Thank you!

One of my favorite mythological fiction books is The Firebrand by Marion Zimmer Bradley. It's the story of the Trojan War told from the perspective of Cassandra, Paris' twin sister. She's usually a very minor character in stories about the Trojan War so obviously Bradley expands/invents a lot. It's in my top favorite books.

Gods Behaving Badly by Marie Phillips was a fun read. It's a modern telling of the fallen Greek Gods. Here's a short blurb about it:

Being a Greek god is not all it once was. Yes, the twelve gods of Olympus are alive and well in the twenty-first century, but they are crammed together in a London townhouse-and none too happy about it. And they've had to get day jobs: Artemis as a dog-walker, Apollo as a TV psychic, Aphrodite as a phone sex operator, Dionysus as a DJ.Even more disturbingly, their powers are waning, and even turning mortals into trees-a favorite pastime of Apollo's-is sapping their vital reserves of strength.Soon, what begins as a minor squabble between Aphrodite and Apollo escalates into an epic battle of wills. Two perplexed humans, Alice and Neil, who are caught in the crossfire, must fear not only for their own lives, but for the survival of humankind. Nothing less than a true act of heroism is needed-but can these two decidedly ordinary people replicate the feats of the mythical heroes and save the world?

The Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. True, it's Young Adult Fiction, but it's well worth the reading. Riordan knows his Greek Mythology.

The "Age of Bronze" series of graphic novels by Eric Shanower is excellent! Browse them at Amazon; I stayed up WAY too late because I couldn't put down the first one until I finished it ...

The Gospel of Lilith is a pretty interesting read. NO! This version is not about Lilith being Adam's first wife nor a female demon none of that sort. The Gospel of Lilith is different than anything I've read before. Not only is this a highly entertaining read, but extremely challenging and thought provoking. This book simultaneously chills and awes. Take a look if you dare...

Till We Have Faces, by C. S. Lewis. It's a re-telling of the myth of Cupid and Psyche. Excellent book.

The Silmarillion. Delves into a complete mythology and creation story of the Lord of the Rings universe. This book took Tolkien 60 years to write. Simply amazing.

I've read 3 of the Percy Jackson books in the past week...I have the next 2 on my bedside table and will begin the fourth tonight! My neice convinced me to watch the movie with her, and I got the books the next day. They may be for kids or young adults, but this 28 year old is a HUGE fan now. I had been interested in mythology in high school, but this has definitely peaked my interest again. I would highly recommend this series to anyone!

Try Mary Renault's THE KING MUST DIE, about the early life of Theseus, and its sequel, THE BULL FROM THE SEA.

I recommend The Penelopiad by Margaret Atwood, the telling of The Odyssey from Penelope's point of view. I read it right after re-reading The Odyssey and loved it!

Sherrilyn Kenyon also has a fantasy series (consititing of three sub-headings: Dark-Hunter, Were-Hunter and Dream-Hunter) based on Greek Mythology comined with her own twist of paranormal romance. She's won numerous awards for them. About 20 books in the series now.
