Huston is a self-proclaimed "pulp" writer, and all his books tend to be gritty, ultra-violent and very suspenseful. In this book, he keeps all those elements and channels Philip K. Dick, adding a little reality-tweaking science fiction. One of my favorite suspense/thrillers was Dennis LaHayne's Mystic River. The book was great and the movie, surprisingly, follow it to a T. Harlen Coben is a great thriller writer. His books always have lots of twists and surprises. Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane
