At the beginning of the story, how does Yep usually interpret his fathers's silence?

Bert says:

His father is struggling to read a book... his father, alas, did not do his homework when in school and never learned to enjoy reading... and today, poor Dad is having such a hard time! Even the comics were hard for him ... if only he had listened to his teachers, he lamented......
