why is margaret atwood offended when she hears americans refer to canada as their 'backyard"?

Todd says:

because american kids don't know how to read and think like canadian kids.

Madame Q. says:

because it just is a reflection of the hegemonic attitude of many Americans, and the egocentricity in their attitudes. referring to Canada as their backyard basically implies that it is not a sovereign nation/culture/'scene' in its own right, and can only be understood in terms of its "big brother neighbor," the U.S. A lot of Canadians don't give a f(ruitcake) about the U.S. and are insulted.

It's like if someone called you their Robin.
