Through the one-way mirror by margaret atwood asked 370 days ago by Caprisha W. - 2 answerswhy is margaret atwood offended when she hears americans refer to canada as their 'backyard"? because american kids don't know how to read and think like canadian kids. because it just is a reflection of the hegemonic attitude of many Americans, and the egocentricity in their attitudes. referring to Canada as their backyard basically implies that it is not a sovereign nation/culture/'scene' in its own right, and can only be understood in terms of its "big brother neighbor," the U.S. A lot of Canadians don't give a f(ruitcake) about the U.S. and are insulted. It's like if someone called you their Robin.
