I recommended it in another question, but the Dungeon Crawlers series by Stefan Leblanc is a good read. It's not an adult fiction though, if that's what you're looking for, though I enjoyed it myself. My son absolutely loves it, even though getting him to read is usually like pulling teeth. It's relatively new, so only episode 1 and episode 2 have been released. I'm not sure when the next one is.

C.J. Cherryh's Coldfire trilogy (Black Sun Rising, When True Night Falls, Crown of Shadows) is a mix of science fiction & fantasy.
Be warned it is a quite a dark-themed series, but it is an interesting & unusual read. I hope you like it!
