What are some good books (fiction or non-fiction) that take place in Vienna or Austria? asked 359 days ago by Gwendolyn S. - 20 answers

I'm moving to Austria in two months for a job and I was wondering whether there are any really good books, the genre is unimportant, that take place in Vienna or Austria or reference the city?

Laurie B. says:

Most of John Irving's books have portions set in Vienna or reference it. "The World According to Garp" and some of his earlier ones in particular.

Christina says:

How about The Historian?

Vanessa says:

Ditto to John Irving. I don't recall much about Austria from Garp but a significant portion of The Hotel New Hampshire takes place there (it's one of my favorite books so I'm biased.)

Part of the graphic novel Persepolis is set in Vienna.

Kate says:

Tasha Alexander's "A Fatal Waltz" is set in Victorian-era Vienna. It's the third book of a series, but can stand alone.

In the Company of the Courtesan by Sarah Dunant. 16th century historical fiction.

Bailey says:

Graham Greene's The Third Man is set in Vienna and very much involved with the layout of the city.

Jennifer D. says:

The Little Book by Selden Edwards. This book jumps around, but is mainly set in 1897 Vienna.

Heather S. says:

The Star of Kazan by Eva Ibbotson

Jess S. says:

There's an entire series by Brock and Bodie Thoene set in Vienna and/or Austria. I think they're the "Zion Chronicles" (misleading title for a series in Vienna, but book 1 is "Vienna Prelude"). I remember them being vivid reads and very well written. (2 cents)

Katie says:

Yes, I know this is an un-answer. But I'm reading The True Story of Hansel and Gretel, set in Poland, and it's amazing.

C K. says:

Robert Goddard's "Caught in the Light" is set partly in Vienna. It is, as they say, a thumping good read!

Laura E. says:

The New novel by Natasha Solomons, 'The Novel in the Viola', published this month in paperback by Hodder starts in Vienna...and is blooming fantastic too!

Elaine H. says:

"An Equal Music" by Vikram Seth is good, mostly set in London but also Vienna. "The Fig Eater" by Jody Shields is a colorful mystery set completely in Vienna.

Kristen says:

The Nazi Officer's Wife:How One Jewish Woman Survived the Holocaust by Edith Hahn Beer

KellyC says:

Richard Russo's Bridge of Sighs, but only part is set in Venice.

Caitlin says:

Frank Tallis: "A Death in Vienna" ... mystery/pyscho-thriller... this is part of a series called the Max Lieberman mysteries

Scot M. says:

The Secret of Sun Mountain http://www.amazon.com/dp/B004HW6ERK Huge free sample on this immense fictional saga of the Comstock. A tale Mark Twain would be proud of.
