What are the best coming of age novels?

Naomi G. says:

Boy's Life by Robert McCammon, so much more, but still coming of age...The Great Santini by Pat Conroy, does anyone else consider that coming of age? I do because of Bull's children, this is the whole family's story.....I Capture the Castle by Dodie Smith, beautiful story, one of my all time favorites.......Special Topics in Calamity Physics by Marisha Pessl, a different kind of coming of age, but really entertaining, and of course, To Kill a Mockingbird, goes without saying.....I wonder if these were the kinds of books you had in mind?

Antoinette says:

Also not sure exactly what you're looking for but: Are you there God? It's Me, Margaret and Tiger Eyes by Judy Bloom. More classic: A Tree Grows in Brooklyn

Peter S. says:

Katja-

This is a great question but may I ask what age bracket you're looking for? For example, there are great 'Coming of Age' books meant for a Young Adult audience -- as guides through a rocky period... and there are also great books written for adult in a nostalgic frame of mind.

Hoping to hear back from you...

My first thought was "Are You There God, It's Me Margaret"..by Judy Bloom.

Alice says:

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, easily. Also My Heart is a Lonely Hunter by Carson McCullers.

Neelofar K. says:

My Favorite Novel is 'Second Chance'by Chet Williamson.Neelofar khar

Andrea says:

A Tree Grows In Brooklyn
The Perks of Being a Wallflower

Sarah says:

Sounds of the River by Da Chen

I read this for an assignment in college.

This memoir of sorts takes place in a rural village in China, following Chen through his University adventures. It's unbelievable intelligent as well as hilarious.

R K. says:

Dandelion Wine by Ray Bradbury

Barbara says:

Are you thinking of boy or girl? You might want to try Edisto by Padgett Powell; a lovely small novel with traces of Huck Finn - set in South Carolina and well worth a read.
