What is a good Holocaust fiction novel? asked 525 days ago by Taylor M. - 16 answers

I'm reading The Book Theif right now and loveit. I have read the Diary of Anne Frank, The Hiding Place, all of the Wurmbrand books and a few others in the same category. What is a good Holocaust fiction novel?

Vanessa says:

The Invisible Bridge by Julie Orringer.

I haven't read it but a reliable reader I know liked Skeletons at the Feast by Chris Bohjalian.

It's not precisely Holocaust but John Steinbeck wrote The Moon is Down for the war effort. It is set in an unnamed country that is occupied by an invading force. The country is likely either Norway or Finland and the occupier clearly seems German. It's haunting.

Sophie's Choice - the best!

Heather says:

Why read Holocaust fiction? There are so many true testimonies on the Holocaust.

Taylor M. (who asked the original question) says:

Heather, you're right. I have read a lot of amazing personal accounts and enjoyed them very much. I just recently read The Book Thief and it is a work of fiction based on the real happenings of some of his family and it was great. It made me wonder what other great books there were out there.
The Book Thief didn't take me behind the scenes in the actual concentration camps like Nazi Doctors did, but I still enjoyed it, though I like actual behind the scenes accounts. Just branching out a little. Do you have any true testimonies that you recommend?

Heather says:

Hi Taylor. I guess it also depends what kind of Holocaust books you are looking for.

This book is really brutal, but I recommend it: The Rape of Nanking: The Forgotten Holocaust of World War II by Iris Chang

I'm not sure that's what you're looking for though.

Of course there is Elie Wiesel's famous book, "Night," and if you haven't read that, it should be top of your list! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Night_(book)

Are you just interested in the Holocaust or other more contemporary genocides?

Kay says:

I really liked "Number the Stars" by Lois Lowry.

Taylor M. (who asked the original question) says:

Well, I guess it could be most genocides because I read a few books about a man in Romanian prison under the communist and he was great. You should read those, by the way. I just ordered Joop- a book about the guy that betrayed Anne Frank and her family, but I am going to look up both of those that you just recommended me. I don't have anything in particular about the genocide books that I like to read, I just enjoy reading those books and thinking about how things got that way. I read the Bible a lot so it means a lot to me when things line up because God said that He would punish the Jews for unbelief and they definitely got punished.

Kay, I read and enjoyed Number the Stars myself :)

MelissaJane says:

Andre Schwarz-Bart's "The Last of the Just" is absolutely extraordinary. I cannot recommend it highly enough.

Cat says:

One of the best that I've ever read is "The Devil's Arithmetic." It's a book for adolescents, but it truly makes the horror all the more real when it's seen through the eyes of children.

Osheame says:

You could try Night be Weisel.

Vanessa says:

What a terrible thing to say about the Jews and the Holocaust. I'm sorry I answered this question.

Kevin H. says:

QBVII by Leon Uris - it's about a libel trial in England that centers on the Holocaust. It's an excellent read.

Marci B. says:

The Hiding Place--Corrie Ten Boom. Great novel, the story she tells, is indeed a fiction, though it is based off of her true to life experience.

Claire says:

Yes - the Book Thief is amazing. Also the boy in the striped pyjamas.

Taylor M. (who asked the original question) says:

The Hiding Place isn't fiction at all. It is a true story and I heard her on the radio talk about it.

Taylor M. (who asked the original question) says:

I read The Book Theif. Thanks for all of these suggestions!
