What is the best biography of Thomas Jefferson? asked 625 days ago by Kristina - 1 answer

I know of Thomas Jefferson generically, as a badass figure in American History, but I would like to know more about him as a person. Any suggestions?

I'm surprised no one has answered this yet...

There's the 6(?) volume Dumas Malone biography from some decades back -- it's still considered THE biography.

And there's the relatively recent Joseph Ellis' book on Jefferson's moral "character" -- "American Sphinx".

Almost 30 years ago there was Andrew Allison's The *Real* Thomas Jefferson -- that was pretty well received...

But you know what? Even though we have amazing recent 1-volume biographies of Adams, Truman, Teddy Roosevelt and Jackson lately Jefferson (and Washington) are still awaiting THE biography that defines them. :-/
