I have two ideas from early to mid twentieth century fiction for girls: Anne of Windy Poplars (4th? book in the Anne of Green Gables series) and Betsy and the Great World (8th? book in the Betsy-Tacy series). I can't remember how large a part the relationship plays in the Betsy books, but it's a great series!
