suggestions for co-ed book club asked 497 days ago by Laureen - 21 answers

Our women's book club is planning our annual "invite the husbands" meeting and I'm looking for suggestions of books (not too long, maybe in the ~200 page range)that have appealed to co-ed bookclubs. Last year we read High Fidelity which turned out to be a great choice.

Ted says:

Fight Club?

Lizzie says:

David Nichols - One Day.

Carleen says:

Before I Forget by Leonard Pitts Jr.

Bonnie says:

Greatest Game Ever Played - its old, but short and good story

Juan says:

People of the Book - Geraldine Brooks
Short and fascinating.

Wendy W. says:

Major Pettigrew's Last Stand--about 300 pages but good for both, or since you did High Fidelity, how about About A Boy

Jason I. says:

It might come off as sort of a book for men but True Grit is 250 pages and told from the view point of a 12 year old girl who is wise beyond her years.

Kathleen K. says:

Stardust, by Neil Gaiman. It has adventure/violence that will appeal to men (and voracious women) but also the fantasy and romance that will appeal to women. Plus, Neil Gaiman is just pretty much an awesome writer.

Sibel A. says:

The Orange Girl...151 pages... and then It is a modern fairy tale....

Carol F. says:

"The Crying Tree," by Naseem Rakha A story about forgiveness. A story that should appeal to men and women.

KellyB says:

Water for Elephants

Melinda S. says:

The Hunger Games - Suzanne Collins

Robert says:

Cold Mountain. Charles Frazier I believe. You wont be sorry!

Anne T. says:

Ape House by Sara Gruen
or as above, Water for Elephants - same author

Paul says:

The Last Boy by Jane Leavy. Superb story of Mickey Mantle

Paul says:

The Last Boy by Jane Leavy.

Verna W. says:

Another Neil Gaiman that I loved: The Graveyard Book.

Wendy says:

The Trust - Sean Keefer

Barbara says:

The Power of One by Bryce Courtenay. Will appeal to men and women...simply a spectacular book full of life, love, history, and humor.

Ashley says:

One day by David Nicholls. Just heard they're making it into a movie

Sophronia says:

The Bridge of San Luis Rey, by Thornton Wilder
A Death in the Family, by James Agee
Things Fall Apart, by Chinua Achebe

These are three titles that both men and women liked when I led a coed book group for many years.

You might also try, Heart of Darkness, by Joseph Conrad.

We also liked One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich, by Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn

The men did not enjoy reading Jane Austin!
