vampire books that are not romance asked 637 days ago by Jennifer - 18 answers

I'm looking for well-written vampire books that are not romance, and preferably have a male main character. Any suggestions?

Bert says:

Anne Rice's "Interview with a Vampire". The book is far better than the movie (I would skip the movie if I were you). I am not into vampire books but this one held my attention. Enjoy!

Naomi G. says:

Salem's Lot by Stephen King, The Strain (The Strain Trilogy) by Guillermo Del Toro, I have read so many but now that I think of it, most of them are romance. Funny! Of course Dracula, :)

Bryce W. says:

Let the Right One In by John Ajvide Lindqvist. It's the anti-Twilight.

Antoinette says:

Of course Interview with a Vampire and Bram Stoker's Dracula. Also, Caroline B. Cooney's The Vampire's Promise trilogy (Deadly Offer, Evil Returns, Fatal Bargain). They're YA but I loved them and they're non-Twilightesque

Vanessa says:

Other than what has already been suggested (Salem's Lot actually scared me the first time I read it), I really liked the Sonja Blue trilogy by Nancy Collins. It doesn't have a male protagonist but it does have a woman that was turned into a vamp and she's really pissed so she goes around killing them and looking for her maker. It was collected in the omnibus "Midnight Blue."

In regards to Anne Rice, I liked "Interview with the Vampire" but you should stop after that one in my opinion. Definitely stop after the third one if you do keep going.

A co-worker loaned me "The Vampire Tapestry" by Suzy McKee Charnas about a modern day vampire and someone who discovers his identity. I actually didn't care for this book but almost everyone else likes it.

Rising Blood, available a e book on risingblood.webs.com, for an intro price of $10.00.
If you liked, interview withe the vampire and DA Vinci code you'll love this because it's of fact and fiction

Melinda S. says:

Darren Shan's "Cirque Du Freak" series (YA though)

Katie says:

For a funny vampire book you should read, Hemophobula: The Wannabe Vampire. My Mom bought it for my younger sister and I was bored one day and picked it up to read. I was surprised for a kids book how funny it is and how much I, being a teenager would like it. But I did. The ending caught me by surprise - don't worry, I won't spoil it for anyone.

MelissaJane says:

Robin McKinley's "Sunshine."

Verna W. says:

Ah, you must read "Blood Oath" by Christopher Farnsworth! Watch the book trailer (what?!) on Amazon. I laughed out loud. But the book isn't funny. I'm about half-way through it and I find it engaging and educational. I love books about Washington DC and underground tunnels and (dramatic music) super-secret special undercover shenanigans going on in this century, the 18th century, the future century - you know.

Moe S. says:

Midnight Mass, by F. Paul Wilson

They Thirst, by Robert McCammon

Lost Souls, by Poppy Z. Brite(erotic elements but NOT romance)

Moe S. says:

Oh, forgot "The Holmes-Dracula File" by Fred Saberhagen

Randy says:

Bring On The Night by Jay Davis. It's an overlooked classic if you like real vampire tales, not stories about brooding. angst filled, lovesick vampires like Twilight, or even brooding angst filled vampires who wish they were human like Anne Rice's stories, who singlehandedly began the destruction of the great vampire genre that Twilight and all the other romance novels passing themselves off as horror have finished. She should be staked for that, lol.

Bring On The Night is just a flat out well written vampire story about a vampire who is a vampire. He is evil, bad and so wicked you almost have to root for him, like in Dracula and King's Salem's Lot. It is a classic of the real vampire genre.

You can still get it on Amazon for next to nothing. You will love it.

Randy says:

Oh, and another pretty good trillogy that will end up a quartet is the vampire series located in old Russia writen by Jasper Kent. I read the first two and just ordered the latest from Amazon today that was just realised. They are good books and actually involve old Vlad the vampire and his machinations in Russia. Some nice, interesting stuff.

Jim M. says:

"The Historian" by Elizabeth Kostova

James says:

Plead Insanity by Sandra Giles - unfortunately it's only available for kindle, but it's cheap!
